FMYD, ECN, NITDA Set to Launch National Youth Internship Programme (NYIP) to Boost Employability – The Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD), in collaboration with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is set to launch the National Youth Internship Programme (NYIP)—a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reducing unemployment and enhancing youth employability in Nigeria.
What Is the National Youth Internship Programme (NYIP)?
The NYIP is a structured, on-the-job training programme designed to equip young Nigerians with practical skills and industry experience. The initiative targets recent NYSC graduates, artisans, and undergraduates, ensuring they gain hands-on expertise in key sectors of the economy.
Key Features of the NYIP
1. Focus on High-Growth Sectors
The pilot phase of the NYIP will concentrate on two critical industries:
- Energy Sector
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector
Each sector will absorb 3,000 interns, providing them with real-world exposure and job-ready skills.
2. Rigorous Selection and Mentorship
A merit-based selection process will ensure that only the most promising and trainable candidates participate. The programme also includes a compulsory mentorship component, allowing interns to learn directly from industry experts.

3. Government-Backed Stipends & Industry Collaboration
To support participants, the government will offer stipends throughout the internship. Additionally, private sector partners have the opportunity to provide industry-matching contributions, further increasing financial support for interns.
4. Post-Internship Innovation Fund
A N1.5 billion Post-Internship Innovation Fund has been set aside to help outstanding interns develop startups or innovative solutions based on the skills acquired during the internship. This initiative aims to foster entrepreneurship and drive economic growth.
NYIP Registration Portal Launch Date 2025 & Expected Impact
The official launch of the NYIP is scheduled for April 2025, with His Excellency, the President of Nigeria, expected to inaugurate the programme. This initiative is projected to:
- Significantly reduce youth unemployment
- Enhance workforce readiness
- Foster economic innovation
